Language Assistants Guide. Language Assistants in Spain | 2020-21
The Language Assistants program began in 1936 with the exchange of language assistants between the United Kingdom and Spain.
This program looks to improve the quality of foreign language education in Spain
by integrating native speakers of the language into the classroom to promote the students understanding of both the language and culture of the foreign country.
Another objective of the program is to facilitate the learning of our own language
and culture among those who come to Spain as language assistants, and thus contribute to their professional development and to the spread of the Spanish language.
Language assistants are exchanged yearly with Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil,
Bulgaria, Canada, China, countries of Oceania (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu), Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta,
Morocco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal,
Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, and the United
States of America. Under the supervision of the full-time teacher, the language assistants help students in Spanish public schools to improve their oral proficiency in the target language. We hope that participating in this program will be a positive experience that
will facilitate both professional development through your work and personal growth
through your experience here in Spain.
